Birthday Parties for 8 to 10 Year Olds in Singapore

Eight venues that fit the age, and the rules that decide it.

Here’s our top picks to host a birthday party for a child of 8, 9 or 10 β€” old enough to find an indoor playground babyish, and still too young for a lot of what comes next.

A lot of the obvious ideas are ruled out by an age limit. Paintball here starts at 14, laser tag usually wants 122cm, and two of the six games at Floor Is Lava need you to be 13. All eight below take this age.

πŸ•ΉοΈ Timezone Orchard Xchange β€” they run the whole thing

Timezone Orchard Xchange is the biggest arcade in Singapore, 22,000 square feet under Orchard Road with 160 games, bumper cars, two kinds of bowling and a six-player VR arena. It is also one of the six Timezone outlets with a party room.

A host takes the group for 80 minutes of unlimited play, hands out the e-tickets, and then everyone sits down in the party area for the last 40 minutes. Bring your own cake, plus drinks and small snacks. Decorations have to stay simple β€” no backdrops or piΓ±atas β€” and snack platters and goodie bags are paid extras.

What each Timezone package includes β†’

πŸ”« HomeTeamNS Laser Quest (Bukit Batok) β€” laser tag from about age 8

Laser Quest at the Bukit Batok clubhouse has a minimum height of 122cm, which works out at roughly eight and up. Most children in this band clear it and younger brothers and sisters often will not.

The party package gives you two hours with the arena and the party room to yourselves, four missions, and all the vests and guns. The room holds 30 to 40 and food and drink are allowed in it. Ten play each mission, so a party of eight goes in as one group.

🀸 SuperPark (Suntec City) β€” the most to do in one afternoon

SuperPark puts about 30 activities in three halls: a flying fox, a ninja track, pedal cars, trampolines, an augmented climbing wall, and a games arena of digital football, basketball, archery and bowling. Nothing else here comes close for variety.

The party slot is timed strictly and no food comes with it, so the cake has to be cut inside the booking rather than after it. It also gets crowded, and the earliest slot of the day is a much quieter place than a Saturday afternoon. Grip socks are included in the party package. Book about two weeks ahead.

πŸ§— SkyPark by Kiztopia (Cineleisure) β€” built for exactly this age

SkyPark is for 6 to 12 year olds: trampolines, a velcro wall you jump at in a suit and stick to, a basketball zone, an interactive wall and the Challenger Arena, on level 5 of Cineleisure with party rooms attached.

Younger brothers and sisters will struggle with most of it.

πŸ§—β€β™€οΈ Climb Central (Kallang Wave) β€” instructors run it, you just bring food

Climb Central at Kallang Wave Mall runs a two-hour Introduction to Climbing for 10 to 20 children. Instructors take the session and supervise every climber, and the harnesses and shoes are included. The group gets a climbing area to itself, which counts for a lot at weekends, when the gym fills up and turns people away.

They set out two tables, 18 stools and a banner, and the party room is yours for the cake. No food, drink or cutlery comes with it. They want three weeks’ notice.

πŸ•΅οΈ Kids in the Room (Marina Square) β€” escape rooms made for children

Kids in the Room builds escape rooms for 5 to 16 year olds. The rooms are brightly lit and no door is ever locked. There are eight themes and the children play a part in each β€” pilot, Egyptologist, marine scientist, sushi chef, K-pop star.

A session covers two rooms with a break in between, and the costumes are included rather than extra. An adult goes in with anyone 12 or under.

πŸŒ‹ Floor Is Lava by Triggered Games (Cineleisure) β€” great games, no party room

Triggered Games runs six game-show rooms where the floor lights up and you keep off the lava, hunt each other in the dark, or shoot hoops against a clock. Sessions are 20 minutes each, so a party needs three or four booked back to back.

Everything is 6 and up, but Press It! and Hoops Madness are 13 and over because shorter arms cannot reach, which leaves Floor Is Lava, Disco Lava, Hide & Seek and Hexa Blasts for this age. Ten fit in a Floor Is Lava room and six in Hide & Seek. There is no party room, so the cake happens elsewhere β€” SkyPark is in the same building.

🎨 Splattify (VivoCity) β€” for the child who is not the sporty one

Splattify is a messy-play studio with a Paint Factory and a Slime Lab, and the point is to throw the paint rather than brush it on. Protective gear is handed out at the door, and the paint is water-based and made without egg, dairy, soy, seafood, shellfish, wheat or peanut derivatives.

A session runs about an hour. Slime goes home the same day, and painted work has to be collected within the week once it has dried.

Three things to check before you book

1. Check the age or height limit first. 122cm at Laser Quest, 6 to 12 at SkyPark, 13 and over on two of the Triggered games. Measure the shortest child on the list.

2. Most packages do not include food. Timezone, SuperPark and Climb Central all give you a room and expect you to arrive with the cake and the food, and at Climb Central the plates as well.

3. Book earlier than feels necessary. Climb Central asks for three weeks and SuperPark for two. Weekend slots at all eight go first.
