Singapore’s themed photo booths, from the laundromat to the hawker stall

Singapore self-photo studios now compete on sets - a laundromat, a train cabin, a hawker stall. Which branches have the ones worth travelling for.

There is a photo booth in VivoCity where the backdrop is the inside of a washing machine. Ten minutes down the road at Orchardgateway, you can be photographed in a train cabin. Bugis Street has a hawker stall with durian and kopi in it. Orchard Plaza has an izakaya.

Somewhere in the last couple of years the self-photo studio stopped being a white curtain and a stool, and nobody sent out a memo. The chains now compete on sets — which means the branch you pick matters more than the brand on the door.

Here’s what’s actually inside them.

Three worth the trip

🚇 Solace Studios (VivoCity) — HarbourFront

Level 2 · HarbourFront MRT · $ · open until 3am

The themed sets here do the work before anyone poses: a subway carriage, a lift interior, and the washing machine. Photo strips are $10 for two, and the concept rooms — the lift and the train — run $12, with extra prints at $2 each. It closes later than anything else in the category, which makes it the stop after a film rather than a trip of its own.

🍜 Standard Photo Studio — Bugis Street

Level 2 · Bugis MRT · $

Four themed booths, and the Hawker Room is the one people come for — xiao long bao, durian and kopi as scenery. There’s also a claw machine room and a spotlight room. The Flash & Dash session gives you four minutes of shooting across three backgrounds and two minutes to choose, and you leave with keychains you decorate yourself as well as a strip. Walk-ins only.

🌸 Another Booth — Orchard

Orchard Plaza, level 5 · Somerset MRT · $ · 24 hours

Not one booth but four rooms you move through in sequence — a sakura room, a convenience store, a baseball club and an izakaya — hopping to the next as each timer runs out. Scan a QR code to start, take props, and the digital copies are included at the end. It’s open around the clock, which is a very short list in Singapore.

Two more worth knowing: Hana Film at Orchard Central is hotel-themed and hands you the sets as a room-service menu, and Solace Haji Lane is the chain’s flagship — nine booths over two shophouse floors, with fisheye and low-angle rooms upstairs that the mall branches don’t have.

The props are free, and there are more of them than you think

Every studio here lays out props at no extra cost — headbands, oversized sunglasses, signboards — and most keep a vanity counter with mirrors, hair dryers and straighteners you can borrow before you start. LIFE4CUTS at Jurong Point goes further and stocks costumes, hanbok included, in keeping with the Korean four-cut format it’s named after.

Changing outfit between frames is completely normal. The counters exist because people do it.

Five things that make the session better

  1. Pick the branch by its sets, not by the chain. Solace’s specialist rooms are at Haji Lane and VivoCity; the mall branches run the standard format.
  2. Budget the extra couple of dollars for a themed room. At Solace that’s $12 rather than $10 — the difference between a backdrop and a set.
  3. Agree two or three poses while you’re queueing. Four minutes is generous for shooting and thin for deciding.
  4. One scan before you leave and the digitals are yours. Solace’s own FAQ gives the download link 72 hours; the camera roll gives it forever.
  5. Weekday afternoons and late nights are the quiet windows. Nothing here takes reservations, so timing is the whole booking system.

What’s actually changed

A photo booth used to be a machine. The backdrop was a curtain, the point was the picture, and one booth was much like another.

Now it’s a place. The chains compete on sets rather than on print quality, and a room can be the reason you cross town rather than the thing you find when you get there. Which is why the branch matters more than the brand — and why a studio ten minutes further away is often a genuinely different afternoon rather than the same one at a different address.
