HaveFun at Cineleisure gives each room a lighting panel with several effects to pick from, so the room you start the night in is not the one you finish it in. Some rooms come with a dart machine alongside the microphones, and the sound is clean, without the sharp echo that gives cheaper rooms away.

This is the outlet the chain puts its best equipment into, and the fit-out is deliberately futuristic. Rooms run in four sizes from six people up to twenty-five, and the song library is genuinely multilingual — Mandarin and English alongside Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Tagalog and Indonesian. Weekday walk-ins are usually fine without booking.

Two things to know. The karaoke-plus-buffet package is the weak half of the deal — the seafood in particular is poor and the spread thins out through the evening — so book the room and eat elsewhere unless the buffet is the point. And the air conditioning is centrally controlled: staff bring shawls rather than adjusting it, which tells you how cold the rooms get, so take a layer. It is on level 8 of Cineleisure Orchard, at the Somerset end of the shopping belt.
