If you graduated this year, there’s a reasonable chance a hired academic gown is hanging on the back of your door right now. NTU’s rented dress goes back to the vendor between 1 and 31 August, which means the window for photographs in it is measured in weeks, not months.
Most people fill that window one of two ways. They book a professional studio, or they take phone photos on the lawn and regret it.
There’s a third option that costs about a fifth of the first one, and it needs about ninety minutes of planning.

The sum
The professional route is genuinely good and priced accordingly. White Room Studio, one of the established names, starts at $390 for around ninety minutes — gown portraits, family portraits and a casual-outfit set, four retouched images, and gowns kept on site for NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT, SIM, SUTD and SUSS. You are buying a photographer who directs you, retouching, and not having to think about the gown.
The self-photo route splits those costs apart:
| Complete Bachelor’s set, hired from NTU’s vendor | $28.30 plus a $20 refundable deposit |
| PhotoNow regular room, 15 minutes | $40 |
| Same room, 45 minutes | $70 |
| What’s included | every digital copy, four 4R prints, one framed square print |
So roughly $70 to $100 all in, against $390 — and you come away with every frame from the session rather than four finished ones.
What you’re giving up, plainly
No one is directing you. That’s the real difference, and it matters more than the gear: a good photographer gets a natural expression out of someone who feels silly in a mortarboard, and a self-timer does not. There’s no retouching unless you do it, and nobody who has shot four hundred convocations knows where to put your parents’ hands.
What you gain, besides the money: time and volume. Forty-five minutes is a long session, you shoot at your own pace, and every frame is yours. If the first attempt is stiff, go back next week — you’ll still be under $200.
Three rooms that suit it
PhotoNow — Centrepoint, Orchard. The obvious one. Canon cameras, LED-lit rooms and a preview screen, and the large room takes two to twelve, so parents and siblings fit in the frame rather than waiting outside. It’s the only one of the three built for a group that size.
Insaeng Selca — Henderson. A private room with studio lights and a remote trigger in your hand, and it prints 6R rather than strips — closer to something you’d frame. Check which days it opens before travelling; they’re more limited than most.
Fotomat — Tanjong Pagar. Plain sets, clean lighting, no props and no themes, which is exactly right for academic dress. Sessions run on reservations rather than walk-ins, so book it.
Five things worth knowing
- Check your own university’s dates. The 1–31 August return window is NTU’s for this year. Every institution runs its own calendar, and it’s on their commencement pages.
- Book the room for the same week you collect the gown. The bottleneck is the dress, not the studio.
- Bring the hood and the mortarboard, not just the gown. The hood colour is what makes a photograph read as a real degree rather than fancy dress, and it’s the thing people forget in the taxi.
- Size the room for who’s coming. A regular room takes up to five; if grandparents are in this, the large one exists for a reason.
- Go on a weekday. Convocation season is the one time of year these rooms fill up, and a Tuesday costs the same as a Saturday.
What the money actually buys
The gap between a seventy-dollar session and a three-hundred-and-ninety-dollar one is not equipment. The self-photo rooms have good cameras and good light, and the files they hand over are perfectly capable of being the photograph on your parents’ wall.
What the money buys is direction — somebody whose entire job is getting an unforced expression out of a person who feels faintly ridiculous in a mortarboard. Whether that is worth three hundred dollars depends on how you photograph when nobody is helping, which is something you already know about yourself.
Prices and dates change every intake — NTU’s figures and the August return window are this year’s, confirmed on their convocation pages; check yours before planning around them. If something on one of our listings is out of date, there’s a form at the bottom of every one.
