K.STAR (Leisure Park Kallang)

K.STAR at Leisure Park Kallang is a karaoke bar on the ground floor of the mall, and the branch of the chain decorated for children.

The rooms are themed — Barbie and Toy Story in the operator’s own line-up, with SpongeBob the one guests tend to ask for — and they are notably roomy, in a category where cramped is the usual complaint. Dynamic lighting comes with them. It opens at 11:30am and closes at 11pm from Sunday to Wednesday, running to 1am from Thursday to Saturday. Promotional afternoon rates have run as low as $9.90 an hour.

The song catalogue is the strongest part of the offer, ahead of the rooms, the lighting or the sound system. Two things to weigh against that: rooms have occasionally been let with a ventilation fault while the common areas stayed cold, and service at the counter can be hit or miss — though the operator answers complaints rather than ignoring them. It is set up for a child’s birthday in a way little else in a category built mostly around nights out is, and the same mall has an ice rink and a bowling alley if the afternoon needs to carry on.
