Climb Central (Novena)

Climb Central at Novena is the one to pick for a first go on a rope. The safety briefing is run slowly rather than rushed, the floor stays uncrowded even on a Sunday evening, and children climb from four — which makes it a rare gym where a nervous adult and a small child can both start on the same afternoon.

The walls cover top rope, auto-belay lanes that let you climb without a partner, and a bouldering section. It is the smallest of the four gyms the chain runs, and the routes are set gently to match. This is also the only one running the top rope verification, the assessment that qualifies you to belay someone else rather than clipping into an auto belay for the rest of your climbing life, so a beginner can start here and come back to get signed off.

Entry is walk-in and there is no booking system. Lockers are free, a first visit covers the briefing and all the gear, and coaching can be arranged. Two things to plan around: weekdays do not open until the afternoon, so a morning session is not possible, and the gym is small enough that a confident climber will work through the interesting lines in a visit or two. It is on level three of Velocity @ Novena Square, a couple of minutes from Novena MRT.
